This is a question that we get all of the time and there is a lot of confusion around this topic. So today I will be clearing up some things and explaining what sizes Goldendoodles (or another kind of Doodles) come in, as well as debunking some myths about weight.
Large Size
The height of a large Doodle will be around 22 to 26 inches and weight will be 75 lbs and up. The largest goldendoodles, I have personally seen was around 110 lbs although there aren’t any real limitations to how large one can get. Here at Morning Glory Doodles our large Doodles average around 80 to 85 lbs.
Standard Goldendoodles size
This is a very common size and most of the Doodles you will run into on the street will fall into this classification. They will have a height from 18 to 22 inches and weigh between 35 to 70 lbs. This size does great in all environments such as apartment or outdoors on a ranch.
Miniature Size
Miniature Doodles will have a height of 16 to 18 inches and weigh 20 to 35 lbs. One thing to note is this is typically the smallest a doodle can get without using artificial insemination to breed the dog. That is one reason why at Morning Glory Doodles we don’t produce toy doodles, because we don’t believe in artificially inseminating our mothers along with the temperament difference when you are dealing with such small dogs.
TOY SIZE
This is the smallest a doodle can get, and they will have a height of 14 to 16 inches and weight 10 to 25 lbs. If you spend time around a doodle in this classification, more times than not you will notice they are much yippier and hyper than one of the larger sizes, because either the father or the mother was a toy poodle. Although both Standard and Toy poodles are both technically “Poodles” I can personally attest that they are quite different dogs when it comes to temperament.
Weight can be deceptive
I would caution anyone against judging a dog based strictly on their weight. The reason being lies in the difference between Poodles and Golden Retrievers (or another breed). Poodles have lighter and taller frames, as well as a deeper rib cage which gives them the appearance of being “heavier” than they are, whereas a Golden Retriever has a much stockier and robust frame as well as more of a barrel shaped rib cage. What this means quite practically is that a 80 lb Poodle will look (and be) much bigger than an 80 lb Golden Retriever. Here is an example of a poodle and retriever that weight roughly the same weight.
