Toy/Mini/Small/Medium/Standard-What does Morning Glory Doodles mean by these term?
One important thing to consider as you are considering different goldendoodles for sale is what size dog you are comfortable with. Sizing words, like toy, mini goldendoodle, medium goldendoodle, etc mean different things to different people, so it is important to make sure that you are pursuing the size dog that you have in mind.
Because Golden Retrievers are not small dogs, “mini” does not mean the same thing that it would if you were considering a different breed. While we can’t guarantee the size that a dog will grow to be, the best way to estimate is to average the size of the parents. Just like with human children, however, this is not an exact science. It is possible for a dog to grow to be larger or smaller than his or her parents, so make sure to keep that in mind! Even within a litter, some pups may take after their mama and some pups may take after their daddy. We are always willing to talk with you about the possibilities, and to share with you the weight and height of the parents of any litter that you are considering. On pick up day, we can help steer you toward a pup that is showing signs of taking after the larger or smaller parent to help you choose a pup that is most likely to grow to a size that you are comfortable with.
The next size up is our mini/small goldendoodle category. Our mini/small parents range from 18-38 pounds. Height is a factor to consider too! For instance, our 38 pound mama is a solid little thing, but only slightly taller than our 18 pound mama. A good test is to take a tape measure and measure up the side of your leg how tall the parents are of the litter you are considering. This may help you visualize the height of a dog, and often the height is a better indicator of the “real feel” of the dog’s size as opposed to weight alone.
Medium sized dogs typically have parents that are between 40-55 pounds. Sometimes a mama in this category may be bred with a smaller daddy, bringing the projected weight down a bit. Standard size doodles have parents that are over 55 pounds. At this time our largest mama is 80 pounds and our largest daddy is 60 pounds.
These size categories can be fluid, and one parent may be in one category and the other parent in a different category (for instance, a standard sized mom bred with a medium sized dad). Within these categories, there can be a range, and we want to help steer you in the best direction to help you find a litter that is a good fit. We are happy to answer any questions you have about the parents to help you think about what litter to choose to give you the best chance to end up with the size adult dog that you are hoping for.
